Reports To (Position Title): Director of Special Programs and Services
Position Start Date: Immediate
Position Description: To provide individual and/or group therapy in speech, language, communication and auditory training designed to maximize the development of language and communication skills in students. MAJOR DUTIES: • Provide IEP mandated speech & language therapy to students designed to address the individual annual goals for students. • Assess each student's individual communication progress & skills both formally through standardized testing and informally through progress monitoring. Analyze results to develop prescriptive treatment plan to meet goals. • Assist in the development of Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and annual goals based upon students’ progress and needs. • Maintain accurate and timely contemporaneous progress notes for students. Complete related service & evaluation logs, Medicaid notes and prescriptions as required. • Prepare detailed annual progress summary reports for students on caseload and comprehensive data-based evaluation reports for initial evaluations and triennial evaluations. • Present formal summaries of student progress, evaluations and recommendations at meetings of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) & Committee on Special Education (CSE). • Consult with teachers, teacher assistants and aides regarding classroom strategies to advance students’ language and communication skills and promote academic learning. • Coordinate and check functioning of students’ cochlear implants, personal ear level amplification devices, and personal hearing aids daily. Adjust and repair minor malfunctions, referring major problems to the audiologist. Advise and instruct students in the proper care and maintenance of their equipment. • Maintain frequent professional communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and suggested home activities to enhance language and communication skills. • Maintain a cordial and professional attitude and relationship with NYSD staff, students & families, school district representatives and other professionals at all times. • All other duties as assigned by supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS: • NY State Certification as TSSLD or TSSHH • Licensure as Speech & Language Pathologist (SLP) preferred • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCCs) preferred • Familiarity with cochlear implants, hearing aids and other personal amplification devices • Experience providing speech language therapy to deaf children • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred • Proficiency in ASL at the Advanced level within two years of employment
