Position Description: SCOPE OF DUTIES The American School for the Deaf currently seeks a dynamic and progressive individual for the position of Principal for campus programs. The successful candidate will exercise leadership, supervision, and administrative skills to promote academic, social and emotional development of each student. PRIMARY DUTIES The successful candidate will possess and effectively articulate: • Strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills • Knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum and assessment that supports student learning for deaf and/or hard of hearing students • Ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL) • Current data and researched-based focus on student achievement • Knowledge of bi-lingual (ASL/English) education philosophy and implications for instruction • Strong background in literacy and mathematics instruction across the curriculum • Strong technology skills • A commitment to the achievement of all students • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and parents to improve student performance • Ability to communicate effectively in writing with a variety of constituents REQUIRED SKILLS • The ability to ensure high standards for student achievement grounded in twenty-first century skills • Experience with leading collaborative staff learning (and PLCs) • Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communications between divergent groups and in group decision-making • Evidence of building positive interdepartmental relationships and parent collaboration • Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation and implementation of curriculum and instruction and implementing Common Core State Standards • Working knowledge of and training in the use of the Connecticut’s Teacher Evaluation Model (SEED) • Experience in designing interventions for struggling students • Ability to effectively and efficiently moderate PPT meetings with visiting school district personnel • Evidence of using data to inform instructional structures, processes, and improvements • Excellent communication skills including the effective utilization of computers, technology and information management tools • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities in addition to deafness • Experience in developing and managing program budgets • Willingness to work collaboratively with other departmental administrators and instructional coordinators MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates must possess the CT Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor Certification (092); Also Deaf Education (057) or Special Education (165). The successful candidate will have a proven track record of success as a school administrator; at least 3-5 years of successful administrative leadership at all levels (elementary through high school).
